I am going to finish a Smilodon gem eyed pendant or die trying.
…I am also going to finish a wolf gem eyed pendant or die trying. Going to go carve at that one after Smilodon for maximum fresh eyes. Hopefully it shouldn’t take TOO long…

Progress on the triple moon ring take two.
A friend showed me one of those triple moon rings a while ago, and I said “oh, I could make one of those” So anyway, now myself is daring me to put up or shut up. The first try didn’t come out quite right, but this one is looking pretty good.

So a year or two ago Dave lost his original wedding ring. He lost a ton of weight, went down a couple sizes, and it slipped off into the trash chute one day.
More recently I bought silver clay to DIY a cosplay thing. I ended up being able to buy the real version of it then needed something to make out of the clay instead. You see where this is going?
No pictures at the moment, but I'm nearly done with the wax carving step. Yeah, this step is extra, but I wanted more time to get the design right then mold it instead of trying to do it in clay first. I might be able to finish it this weekend entirely, which is super exciting.
But then of course, the deadline I set for myself was our anniversary (late October, will be our 5th) and I don't know if I'll be able to hold onto it for that long without saying anything.

We're covering lost wax casting in class now. After messing around with carving wax I've got several burnt fingertips and three 'paper' cuts on my index finger where I'd accidentally pressed it into the back of one of my blades. I also sacrificed one of my soldered irons to the wax but I still don't know what I'm going to make for the class assignment.

Pewter Skulls Nov 2022
Tumblr media
The dire wolf, cave lion, black vulture 2.0, and raven skull all work. I'm going to have to remake half of the raven skull mold due to failure but that's ok. It happens! My little coelacanth figurine is also coming out. They're fat and cute and stand up on their own. These are all raw casts; there's been zero cleanup and sprue bits are still on. They'll have sprues and imperfections ground off, then have their recesses oxidized before a spin in the jewelry tumblr and a finishing touch on the bench lathe.

Wax carving process using a scalpel, I decided to remove sections from the exterior to reveal the layers from that dip in dip out process from creating the objects form, exposing the inside on the wax replicates the form of the fingerprint which I have embodied into my body of work throughout the module, it adds an interesting element to the exterior and again re-emphasises it’s fragile structure.

The technique for wax casting haven't changed much since those days but it sure isn't that easy to cut something so small even using modern equipment...

A golden ram and a stone lion, found in a tomb at the archaeological site of Gonur Depe (dated from 2400 to 1600 BCE) in Turkmenistan. The finger in the background shows how small these figures are, demonstrating the extraordinary skill of the crafter.
